By Kevin McCallIf you have been on the Marist College campus or have followed the Red Foxes’ women’s basketball team at any point during the last four years you probably recognize Rebekah Hand '20. Rebekah completed her career as a Marist student-athlete with her name all over the record books for the Red Foxes’ women’s basketball team. In fact, she was named the Marist Athletics Female Co-Sportsperson of the Year prior to graduating with her bachelor’s degree in Biology. Rebekah’s postgraduate plans are just as jam packed as her schedule as a Marist student-athlete was, as she will be working and attending graduate school. Shortly after the Marist women’s basketball team’s run in the 2020 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship was unexpectedly cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Rebekah began to search for opportunities in health sciences. She quickly secured a part-time role as a Laboratory Assistant at HealthTrack Rx, a clinical solutions company that helps clinicians with appropriate medication prescribing and monitoring. "Due to the increased Covid-19 samples (the company) needed additional help with preparing and assisting with materials the infectious disease doctors need for sample identification," Rebekah said. "After senior year ended prematurely I focused on what I could control, like job searching, instead of focusing on the things I couldn’t control. I’m more thankful than ever to have a degree in biology so I can help however I can during these times." Rebekah worked with Dr. Mary Jones, the Executive Director of the Center for Career Services, to connect with Marist alumni in the Dallas, Texas, area close to Rebekah’s hometown of Argyle, Texas. By using resources such as LinkedIn and learning about the Marist College Alumni Career Network, Rebekah was able to do more thorough research on opportunities that were relevant to her biology major in college. After senior year ended prematurely I focused on what I could control, like job searching, instead of focusing on the things I couldn’t control. I’m more thankful than ever to have a degree in biology so I can help however I can during these times. Prior to her job offer from HealthTrack Rx, Rebekah was accepted into the MBA program at University of North Texas. She will begin classes for the program this fall and spend both of her years at the university serving on the coaching staff of the school’s Division I women’s basketball team.
“I’m extremely excited to start my graduate assistantship with the UNT women’s basketball staff in August,” Rebekah said. “Although I have only met them over Zoom, they seem like great people and am really grateful I will get the opportunity to work with them.” Rebekah’s long term goal is to work in medical device sales. She will certainly have her hands in many roles for the next couple of years. UPDATE (July 11, 2020): Read more about Rebekah's job at HealthTrack Rx in this Poughkeepsie Journal article.
